On 22 October, the Latvian Ministry of Defence and the National Centre for Defence Logistics signed a contract with Dynamit Nobel Defence for the delivery of the Skorpion² mine-laying system — a key step in strengthening Latvia’s defensive capabilities along its eastern border.
Latvia’s Defence Minister Andris Sprūds described the purchase as a “strategic step toward strengthening our country’s defence capabilities”, highlighting the system’s role in ensuring national readiness and territorial security.
The agreement covers delivery of the Skorpion² system, associated ammunition and AT2+ anti-tank mines, as well as comprehensive training for personnel. The procurement forms part of a wider effort to reinforce regional deterrence and resilience within NATO’s eastern flank.
The contract also underscores Latvia’s commitment to involving local industry, boosting regional value creation and ensuring long-term security of supply. It opens the door for further collaboration and potential participation from other nations interested in joining the programme.
