In a landmark decision announced today by Austrian Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner, Austria has selected the Leonardo M-346FA as the replacement for its retired Saab 105 trainer jets. The acquisition, part of a “Government-to-Government” deal with Italy, involves purchasing 12 advanced M-346FA jets.
The move aligns with the Austrian General Staff’s recommendation and is supported by the long-term financial framework “ÖBH 2032+,” approved in 2022. Contract negotiations with the Italian government are currently underway.
A significant aspect of the agreement includes industrial cooperation to involve Austrian companies, ensuring economic benefits and strengthening the local defense industry.
“This cooperation demonstrates the excellent partnership and friendship between Italy and Austria. My special thanks go to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for her crucial contribution to this agreement,” said Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer.
Defence Minister Klaudia Tanner emphasized the importance of the acquisition:
“With these jets, we close a critical capability gap in our Air Force. The training of our pilots will return entirely to Austria, while we enhance our airspace defense significantly. This strengthens Austria’s security, the protection of our citizens, and our neutrality against aerial threats.”
The decision has also been welcomed by regional leaders, with Upper Austrian Governor Thomas Stelzer highlighting its impact on the Linz-Hörsching airbase:
“The acquisition ensures the long-term relevance of the Fliegerhorst Vogler airbase, preserving high-quality jobs and military significance for decades.”
