Lockheed Martin’s First Bulgarian F-16 Block 70 Takes Flight: A Milestone for NATO Partnership

Lockheed Martin has just announced a successful maiden flight of Bulgaria’s first F-16 Block 70, flown by test pilot Charles “Seeker” Hoag at their Greenville, South Carolina facility. This historic flight marks a significant upgrade for Bulgaria’s Air Force, making it the second European country to introduce the advanced F-16 Block 70 into its fleet.

The flight, which took place on October 22, included rigorous system tests validating the jet’s advanced performance and supersonic capabilities. This is the first of 16 F-16 Block 70 jets scheduled for delivery to Bulgaria, under two Letters of Acceptance signed in 2019 and 2022.

OJ Sanchez, VP and General Manager of Lockheed Martin’s Integrated Fighter Group, highlighted the aircraft’s role in securing Bulgaria’s borders and strengthening alliances: “The F-16 Block 70 is designed as a versatile and adaptable aircraft. From air policing to potential offensive missions, it bolsters NATO’s collective security.”

Currently, 27 countries operate the F-16 globally, with six choosing the Block 70/72 models for their fleets—a testament to the aircraft’s enduring legacy and adaptability in 21st-century defense.
