In a significant advancement for aerospace and defense in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region, Embraer has officially partnered with OGMA S.A., its esteemed subsidiary in Portugal, to undertake comprehensive maintenance and modernization of the A-29 Super Tucano aircraft. Additionally, Embraer has secured a major sale of 12 A-29N Super Tucano aircraft to the Portuguese government. This strategic collaboration positions OGMA as the first company in EMEA equipped with the specialized capabilities to support and enhance the A-29 fleet, marking a pivotal moment for regional defense infrastructure.
Pioneering Excellence in Aircraft Maintenance, Modernization, and Sales
Embraer’s decision to engage OGMA underscores a commitment to expanding high-level maintenance and modernization services within the EMEA region. As the first company in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa to offer these advanced capabilities, OGMA will not only maintain existing A-29 Super Tucano aircraft but also implement future modifications tailored to meet the evolving needs of current and prospective customers. This initiative builds upon OGMA’s existing role in providing logistical support for the A-29 Super Tucano demonstrator, enabling global demonstration missions that showcase the aircraft’s versatility and performance to potential clients worldwide.
Securing Strategic Sales to Strengthen Defense Capabilities
In a landmark achievement, Embraer has secured its first European order for the NATO-standard A-29N Super Tucano, comprising 12 aircraft sold to the Portuguese government. Valued at approximately $210 million (€200 million), this deal not only marks the first sale of the A-29N but also underscores Portugal’s leadership in adopting advanced defense platforms. The A-29N Super Tucano, unveiled in 2023, incorporates NATO-required features such as single-pilot operation and a tactical data link, enhancing its operational versatility and interoperability within NATO frameworks.
Expanding the A-29 Super Tucano Footprint
With over 260 units delivered globally, the A-29 Super Tucano has been adopted by more than 15 air forces, including those of Mali, Mauritania, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Angola within the EMEA region. Embraer’s strategic move to certify OGMA for A-29 maintenance aims to generate substantial revenue through service provisions to current operators, while also creating immediate growth opportunities for OGMA. This partnership not only enhances Embraer’s service capabilities but also contributes to the strengthening of Portugal’s aeronautical cluster, fostering economic growth and technological advancement within the country.
Johann Bordais, President & CEO of Embraer Services and Support, stated, “We are following market developments for the A-29 Super Tucano and intend for OGMA to become a service center of excellence for the aircraft. OGMA is a strategic asset for Embraer in the EMEA region, playing a central role in many present and future projects of our company.”
Strategic Investments and Future Prospects
Embraer has consistently invested in OGMA since its privatization, emphasizing the integration of OGMA into Embraer’s global operations. A recent investment of €74 million enabled OGMA to achieve certification for maintaining Pratt & Whitney’s GTF engines, essential for the next generation of commercial aircraft. This investment is projected to create 300 jobs and potentially triple OGMA’s annual turnover to €600 million, demonstrating Embraer’s dedication to expanding its footprint in Portugal and enhancing the local economy.
Looking ahead, OGMA will undertake the certification for A-29 maintenance, followed by opportunities to modernize the aircraft to meet the future demands of its operators. Jackson Schneider, President & CEO of Embraer Defense and Security, highlighted, “The A-29 Super Tucano is generating a lot of interest in several European air forces. Embraer, together with OGMA on the services field, is preparing to respond to the market by executing the modifications and technological evolution that are requested to meet various missions in the most effective way.”
Portugal Leads the Way with NATO-Standard Super Tucano Acquisition
Nuno Melo, Portuguese Defence Minister, emphasized the collaboration’s significance, stating, “The project will involve a strong participation of the Portuguese industry in highly technological areas, with a view to reconfiguring the aircraft to NATO standards and specifications.”
A Global Footprint with Local Impact
The A-29 Super Tucano’s rugged and versatile design allows it to operate from remote or unpaved runways with minimal maintenance support, making it an ideal choice for diverse mission profiles including light attack, armed reconnaissance, close air support, and advanced training. Embraer envisions a robust global market for the A-29, aiming to deliver 500 units over the next two decades, with an estimated business value of $6.5 billion.
Portugal’s acquisition of the A-29N Super Tucano further bolsters its air force’s capabilities, complementing existing Embraer KC-390 transports. As Embraer continues to innovate and expand its service offerings through strategic partnerships like the one with OGMA, the company remains at the forefront of advancing global aerospace and defense solutions.
