Rome, Italy – In a significant development for European air defense, Italy has announced an order for up to 24 Eurofighter Typhoon jets. Signed today in Rome, the contract follows Spain’s order for 25 Typhoons last week, marking a pivotal moment in the Eurofighter programme.
This latest acquisition underscores Italy’s commitment to modernizing its air force. The new aircraft will replace the Italian Air Force’s Tranche 1 jets, ensuring access to state-of-the-art technology and enhanced operational capabilities.
Giancarlo Mezzanatto, Chief Executive of Eurofighter Typhoon, emphasized the aircraft’s integral role in Europe’s defense strategy, stating:
“During the past seven days, we have seen two of the four Eurofighter Core Nations sign new contract orders, with a clear desire to modernize their Air Forces and confirm the crucial role they attribute to our aircraft.”
Stefano Pontecorvo, Chairman of Leonardo, celebrated the milestone as a testament to the strong collaboration between industry and institutional partners. He highlighted that the dual orders from Italy and Spain solidify Eurofighter’s position as Europe’s premier defense programme, offering cutting-edge capabilities while contributing to long-term security.
The Eurofighter Typhoon, a product of international collaboration among Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom, is recognized for its versatility, advanced systems, and interoperability within NATO operations. This dual milestone signals a robust future for the Eurofighter programme, bolstered by continued investment and innovation.
The announcement was attended by senior defense officials and industry leaders, including representatives from Leonardo, NETMA, and the Italian Air Force, showcasing the unity between key stakeholders in advancing European defense.
