Rheinmetall has recently delivered an additional 20 Marder infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) to Ukraine, bolstering the country’s defenses amid ongoing conflict with Russian forces. Completed at the end of Q3 2024, this delivery increases the total Marder and other combat vehicles Rheinmetall has supplied directly to Ukraine or through ring exchange (Ringtausch) agreements to nearly 200 units. The Marder 1A3 variant, with advanced laser rangefinding capabilities, enhances precision in target engagement, providing Ukrainian forces with a crucial advantage.
This latest delivery, financed by the German government, represents a mid double-digit million-euro investment in Ukrainian defense capabilities. Rheinmetall’s initial shipment of Marder 1A3s to Ukraine was arranged in March 2023, with subsequent deliveries contributing to Ukraine’s combat readiness in the face of Russian aggression.
Since spring 2022, Rheinmetall has been refurbishing these vehicles from Bundeswehr stock, at first independently and later as part of German government-backed support, ensuring each Marder is prepared for immediate deployment. This refurbishment process takes place at Rheinmetall’s facilities in Unterlüß and Kassel, Germany.
With a legacy of service dating back to its original development for the Bundeswehr, the Marder remains a proven and reliable asset in modern warfare. While the Marder continues to serve, the Bundeswehr has been gradually transitioning to the Puma IFV, now with over 300 of these cutting-edge vehicles in active use.
