In a significant expansion of Spain’s defense capabilities, the Spanish government has awarded Rheinmetall a contract worth approximately €150 million to supply 84 Eimos 81mm mortar systems. This framework agreement, executed with Rheinmetall’s subsidiary Rheinmetall Expal Munitions, emphasizes Spain’s commitment to strengthening its tactical support systems across multiple branches of its armed forces, including the Army, Navy, and Air Force. The systems, along with maintenance and training support, are scheduled for phased delivery from late 2024 through 2027.
The contract reaffirms Rheinmetall’s role as a trusted partner to the Spanish Armed Forces, while underlining the company’s expertise and leadership in weaponry and ammunition technology. The Eimos 81mm mortar systems, platform-based for versatile integration, will enhance Spain’s tactical response capabilities with mobility and adaptability, particularly suitable for rapid deployment in diverse operational scenarios.
As part of Spain’s UTEX program, initiated by the Ministry of Defence in 2017, Rheinmetall’s systems will be compatible with various tactical light vehicles previously tested by the Spanish military. This collaboration not only strengthens Spain’s current defense posture but also sets a strong foundation for Rheinmetall’s ongoing contributions to European defense innovation.
