Czech Republic Orders Two Embraer C-390 Millennium Multi-Mission Aircraft, Strengthening NATO Capabilities and Local Aerospace Industry

In a strategic move to bolster its military transport and multi-mission capabilities, the Czech Ministry of Defense has confirmed the purchase of two Embraer C-390 Millennium aircraft. With this acquisition, the Czech Republic joins the ranks of NATO allies—such as the Netherlands, Hungary, and Portugal—leveraging the C-390’s versatile mission profile and cutting-edge technology to enhance its defense posture and operational reach.

These advanced aircraft are designed to handle a broad spectrum of critical missions, including:

  • Tactical transport of personnel, vehicles, and heavy equipment
  • Medical evacuation and disaster response
  • Firefighting and humanitarian aid
  • Air-to-air refueling

Equipped with a maximum payload of 26 tons and reaching speeds up to 470 knots, the C-390 is built to perform under demanding conditions. Its robust landing gear and rear cargo ramp enable operations from both paved and unpaved runways, providing flexibility crucial to the Czech Air Force’s operational requirements.

Boost to Czech Aerospace Industry

The agreement signifies more than just a hardware acquisition; it’s an investment in the Czech Republic’s aerospace sector. Local suppliers will play an instrumental role in producing components for the C-390 program, aligning with the government’s vision to stimulate domestic industrial growth and innovation within the defense sector.

“This acquisition is crucial for our military, as recent events in Afghanistan and Sudan have shown the necessity for long-range troop and cargo transport capabilities,” stated Defence Minister Jana Černochová. “These aircraft will empower our Air Force with the flexibility to respond swiftly to various missions, both domestically and internationally.”

Strengthening NATO and Embraer Collaboration

Bosco Da Costa Junior, President & CEO of Embraer Defense & Security, acknowledged the value of the Czech Republic’s trust in Embraer, noting: “This order reflects a shared vision with NATO to equip its members with superior capabilities to manage complex, demanding operations. Additionally, our collaboration with the Czech aerospace sector underscores Embraer’s commitment to supporting local expertise and production quality.”

The C-390’s proven reliability, with over 15,000 flight hours globally and a mission capability rate of 93%, reinforces its position as a leading choice for NATO and other defense forces worldwide.

Future Outlook

With this partnership, the Czech Republic reinforces its role within NATO while advancing its national defense and industrial ambitions. The inclusion of the C-390 in the Czech fleet sets a precedent for ongoing modernization, preparing the Air Force to meet future demands on a global scale. The acquisition also serves as a testament to the growing collaboration between Embraer and NATO, showcasing how industry partnerships can support regional stability and readiness.
