Today, Leonardo and Rheinmetall officially launched their joint venture, creating a strategic European nucleus for the development and production of military combat vehicles. This groundbreaking partnership, following their Memorandum of Understanding from July, unites two defense giants with the aim of accelerating Europe’s self-sufficiency in state-of-the-art land systems.
The joint venture will spearhead the industrial development and marketing of the new Italian Main Battle Tank (MBT) and the Lynx platform for the Armoured Infantry Combat System (AICS). Part of the Italian Army’s modernization program, this collaboration extends beyond combat tanks to encompass recovery, engineering, and bridge-laying vehicles, establishing a robust framework for various land combat capabilities.
“This is a significant step towards the creation of a European Defence system based on specialized shared platforms. Rheinmetall and Leonardo aim at developing state-of-the-art technologies able to compete at international level,” said Roberto Cingolani, Leonardo’s CEO.
This joint venture marks a powerful step toward European defense autonomy, strengthening the continent’s defense industry while meeting global standards.
