Germany wants to establish domestic production of the U.S.-designed PAC-3 MSE interceptor as demand for advanced air and missile defence systems continues to outpace available supply.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius has discussed the proposal with U.S. defence officials, arguing that an additional production site in Germany could help relieve pressure on the global PAC-3 supply chain. Berlin has indicated it is prepared to manufacture a broader range of Patriot components domestically, including interceptors and launch-system elements.
Germany already has a substantial industrial role in the Patriot ecosystem. MBDA produces PAC-2-related systems, while Lockheed Martin has expanded cooperation with German industry as part of a wider effort to strengthen PAC-3 production and sustainment capacity across Europe.
Any production of PAC-3 MSE interceptors in Germany would still require agreement from the U.S. government and Lockheed Martin. The move nevertheless highlights a wider NATO trend: shifting from purchasing finished systems towards establishing local production capacity and more resilient defence supply chains.
